I was listening to the new audio by Abraham-Hicks today (Money and the Law of Attraction) and actually laughed out loud at one of the answers Abraham gave to a question regarding a career choice and the opinion of a ’significant’ other. I don’t remember the question verbatim, but it was one in a line of questions that had to do with finding your life’s work and choosing a career. Before I get to the answer that Abraham gave that made me laugh out loud, I have to add a comment on the “life’s work” question.

I’m sure I’m not the only person who has questioned what it is I should “do” with my life or what my life’s purpose is- and it was great to hear Abraham almost laugh at the notion that we are supposed to have one and only one thing that we want to do with our life. I have NEVER had a definitive idea as to what it was I was supposed to do, I’ve only known that I wanted to do something on my own (there’s a quality of life when you control your time that you just can’t put a price on) and that I need to be able to grow, work with other people, be creative and help people along the way. As I’ve let go of what it is I’m “supposed” to do, I’ve found something that I “love” to do! And for now, that’s enough for me.

The question that was raised to Abraham re: a significant other was that the person wanted to do something different career wise, yet didn’t think their “significant” other would get on board. The first thing Abraham said was that they needed to think about their “significant” other as their “insignficant” other (that was when I laughed out loud). That when we look for the approval of other people, we are not in vibration with what it is we truly want. If we place SO much emphasis on the opinion of other people, whose life are we living anyways? What I have found through much trial, error, heartache and finally peace- is that when you get in alignment with what it is that makes your heart sing (even if it’s not for the next 40 years), the people in your life (significant or otherwise), will get on board with you.

This was one of those books that I literally could not put down…..and was sad to finish! I read the book a couple of years ago and got so caught up in it that I remember sitting on the couch at my parents house over the holidays- all the kids running around, cooking in the kitchen- typical holiday noise, but I was able to tune it all out and stay focused on this book (I’m not one of those people who can read with music on….unless it’s instrumental). So, needless to say I was really excited when I saw that this movie was coming out.

What made it really great was that I was able to take my daughter with me to see the movie (I knew she wouldn’t be up for reading the book just yet…..she’s still a little more focused on The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants…). The movie was great, certainly not a disappointment, but not as good as the book (but then again, they never really are). Queen Latifah did a great job as May Boatwright, I love watching anything she does, but this was a great role for her. I haven’t watched anything with Dakota Fanning in a few years, and she’s definitely growing into a great actress. There were a couple of different parts of the movie when my daughter (who is only 11) turned to me because she didn’t understand what was going on (like when the young boy, Zachary has to enter the theater in a door marked ‘colored’ as opposed to the front entrance). I realized how important it is that she (and my son) see movies like this. (Next up is The Express….).

The music that accompanies the film just puts you in the south too (I may have to take a look at the soundtrack). Alicia Keyes was wonderful (I kept trying to figure out if she was singing any of the soundtrack songs). Jennifer Hudson and Sophie Okonedo were fantastic too. My biggest recommendation is to read the book and bring some Kleenex to the theater- it’s definitely a tear jerker!

So we got back from vacation late last night. Nothing too terribly exotic- but beautiful none the less. We went to Couer d’Lene in Idaho. An absolutely beautiful area- I’d have to honestly say I couldn’t find a single thing that wasn’t enjoyable about the area. It was one of those trips that was fun, relaxing, pleasant and just overall perfect (even with the kids arguing!). While the plane ride wasn’t long (and I was able to sleep in this morning), I’m feeling pretty exhausted tonight, but wanted to share a few thoughts.

Sometimes when I think of self-help, I still have a tendency to think that it’s outside of me- meaning that it has to be a book, a movie, a saying, some sort of thing that is not a part of me. Which, as goofy as I think I am at times seems a bit ironic considering the name of this site! Having been away for a few days (and away from working on my sites and everything else web related), I sort of felt a little bit of a pinch today. Nothing major- but sort of this tensing up feeling. I didn’t do much with it- just sort of acknowledged that it was there. After sitting with it for a while, I realized that it’s just a part of the process. While I am still reading something that keeps me focused (yes, a fourth Brian Weiss book), I’m also reading more about blogging and web work. So in not working these past few days- what I was feeling today was just sort of re-attaching if you will, to what is I’m doing.

Now, as I’m getting ready to go to bed (after my ‘lovely’ tub….), I’ve just decided to simply acknowledge what I was/am feeling, get back to meditating tomorrow ( yes, I skipped a few days on vacation…my ipod was just about drained!) and find a way to squeeze pilates into a very busy day. Which, when I consider the payoff I get, won’t feel like I’m squeezing anything at all.

First off, a very Happy Father’s Day to all the Dad’s out there. We actually celebrated Father’s Day with my family yesterday- we had a barbeque, swam and just enjoyed the nice summer weather ( getting a little too nice- it was pretty hot. But I’m not complaining- I LOVE summer!). I had a couple of moments yesterday that just made me sit back and realize how fortunate I am for the people in my life- and my Dad is definitely one of them. We spent the better part of the morning putting together my new BBQ- although we shook hands prior to starting, agreeing we wouldn’t argue or get frustrated with one another (we tend to butt heads…..probably just because we’re both so head strong!). Towards the end of the assembling (which went smoothly- even though we were roasting in the garage), my son came in to help us. I had to stop and get the camera to take a few pictures of my Dad and son, working peacefully next to one another, feeling so grateful that my Dad has never complained about being more than just a grandfather to my kids (who lost their father 5 years ago). It brings me such joy to see the pleasure he takes in just spending time with all of his grandchildren.

I’m also fortunate enough to have my maternal grandfather here as well. Both my grandmother and grandfather are still here and came over to enjoy the day with us yesterday. They’re 83 and 85. My grandfather even got in the pool to cool off and enjoyed a little bit of a swim with us. It’s always so fun to see the kids get so excited whenever one of the adults gets in to swim- at one point, all the guys were in the pool with all the kids (my dad, uncle, brother and grandfather). It was truly a day to appreciate the simple things in life- for which I’m very grateful.

I have to admit it- I’m an Oprah fan. Most of the time it depends on my mood and what the topic is, but thanks to the wonderful technology of DVR’s, I don’t have to worry about that decision until late at night when I’m in bed and feel like watching.

One of the shows she had that was on a couple of weeks ago featured the author Brian L. Weiss, M.D who wrote the book Many Lives, Many Masters. He is a psychiatrist who does hypnosis and past life regression. I had actually heard of this book but hadn’t ever thought about reading it until I watched this episode. In addition to a couple of guests on the show Dr. Weiss also hypnotized Dr. Oz (Oprah’s resident medical expert and a pretty ’scientific’ guy- I always watch the episodes w/Dr. Oz). It was pretty fascinating to see this very traditional doctor do something like this and put some faith in it. It was also amazing to hear a couple of the guests on the show and watch parts of the video showing their sessions and to hear afterwards what had changed in their lives because of the work with Dr. Weiss.

I started reading the book yesterday and CAN’T put it down! I’m about to go read a little more when I’m finished with this post. I love non-fiction books that read like novels. It’s the true story of Dr. Weiss’ first patient he worked with using Past-Life therapy. It’s not just the past lives that she remembers that are interesting- it’s what happens in between.

This is a great read- especially for fans of Abraham (Esther and Jerry Hicks).

I didn’t realize it had been so long since my last post, sorry! I’ve been a little wrapped up in getting the hosting account set up for this blog as well as working on another site. Time flies when you’re having fun….. So yesterday I had a facial. It had a been a while since I’ve had a facial, as I tend to go for the massage whenever I need some pampering (and often it’s ‘just because’- I am a bit of a massage junkie). However, as my time in the sun has caught up with me I figured it’s time I start taking my skincare routine a bit more seriously. Which is to say that I can’t just get away with washing my face twice a day and moisturizing. So, I went in to see where I needed to start. I went to the same spa in town where I get my hair done and get massages (ok- a little shameless plug for Oasis- the place is a little piece of heaven for me and every single person who works there is great!). I had to fill out a new customer profile for the facial since it had been so long (my bad). The esthetician was super sweet and of course the bed was warm. She talked to me a little bit in the beginning and then when she did a little microdermabrasion (which I may be going back for again, but have decided to start with a couple of peels. I’ll let you know how that goes….), other than that it was completely relaxing, soothing spa music in the background and I was completely comfortable (oh yeah, and she put lotion on my hands, covered them with plastic and then put heated mits on my hands! fabulous!!!). It was an outstanding way to start the day if I do say so myself! So, does pampering count when it comes to self-help? Clearly you know how I feel about it. A massage or spa pedicure can completely take the stress away, and not just for the time during the session. It’s sort of a validation for me that taking care of myself is a priority and I KNOW my kids benefit from it (although maybe not to the degree I do!). My daughter (who is 11) actually asked me how old you have to be to get a massage. To which I replied, “Old enough to pay for it yourself!”. So, as far as I’m concerned, as long as you can afford it, then yes, pampering absolutely falls under ’self-help’. Now….back to iTunes to turn on my background ocean sounds. I’m such a geek.

I never in a million years would’ve thought that the self-help industry would get into making movies! With the success of the movie ‘The Secret’, it makes perfect sense. I just got the movie version of Louise Hay’s ‘You Can Heal Your Life’ and watched it the other night. The message is very similar to ‘The Secret’ (although this book has been out for years- and many of the authors in this movie have been talking about the Law of Attraction for years as well…..anyways…), but it’s less about “getting whatever you want” and more about changing your thoughts to live the life you desire. That’s certainly not a dig about ‘The Secret’, because I enjoyed that too- they’re just different. One thing that was similar to ‘The Secret’ that I really enjoyed was all of the commentary from the different authors. There were a few authors that I have heard about, but never read. It was interesting to hear their perspective (and of course now I’m interested in reading some of their books). And of course Wayne Dyer was on- one of my favorite authors!

I think what I enjoyed most about this movie was just hearing Louise Hay speak. Her story was fascinating. She’s been doing the work she does for so long- I had no idea she founded her publishing company later in life (which actually seems to be the case with many people. They come into their own by living through difficult experiences and as they get older, are more comfortable with who they are and much more capable of following their own path. Hhhmm….something I need to remember!). The movie was made sometime during 07, and at the time I believe she was turning 80 or was over 80. Pretty amazing really. It’s an inspirational story to say the least. The only recommendation I can make when watching this movie is that you watch it when you’re not too tired- I was a bit sleepy, fortunately the information was interesting enough to keep me watching. Enjoy!
